Obituary of Jim Lyons

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Jim Lyons on December 7, 2023 at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Jim passed away peacefully at the age of 86 surrounded by his loving family.

At his request there will be no service.

Jim leaves his cherished family to mourn: his wife Nora, his daughters, Marie Parker (Doug), Janice McLeod (Keith), and Julie Backlund; his four grandchildren, Lauren and Hayley Parker and Dylan and Lydia McLeod; his sister–in- law Carole Bearss; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was born on August 4 ,1937 in Kipling, Saskatchewan to parents Mary and Joseph Lyons. Jim loved sports and was an outstanding athlete. He spoke fondly of playing baseball and hockey with his cousins when he was a young boy growing up in Kipling. He attended Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan from 1953-1959. He played hockey, baseball and football for the Notre Dame Hounds. He was proud to be a ‘Hound’ and spoke fondly of Monsignor Athol ‘Pere’ Murray. In 1960, he attended teacher’s college in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, and after graduating, he married Nora (nee Dombowsky). He returned to Saskatchewan and taught in Moose Jaw, Leask and St. Mary High School in Prince Albert until he retired in 1991.

His love of sports continued into adulthood. He played baseball for the Prince Albert Bohemian Baseball Team in 1967-68 and loved to curl, as well. As well as playing sports, he was proud to coach curling and football at St. Mary High School. He proudly remembers winning the provincial football championship in 1971.

In 2012 he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in North Battleford as a member of the Notre Dame Hounds Baseball Team.

In his retirement years, he enjoyed spending time at his cabin at Little Bear Lake, watching the Toronto Blue Jays games, gardening and spending time with family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Charlie (late Jean) Lyons, Bernard (late Sheila) Lyons and Ann (late Duane) Schwartz; his sister and brothers-in-law, Charlie (late Betty) Dombowsky and Edward Bearss; his mother and father-in-law, Jacob and Mary Dombowsky.

Thank you to Dr. James and the staff on level 6 at Victoria Hospital for their kind and compassionate care given to him during his final days. His family is grateful.
