Hélène Marcotte

Obituary of Hélène Thérèse Marcotte

Our beloved Mom, Hélène, passed away October 30, 2025, at 10:25 p.m. Her loved ones held vigil with her during her final days. Fulfilling her greatest wish, we told stories and held her hands, cried, laughed and sang many of her favorite songs as we had done for dad, Louis, who passed in 2018. Mom had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Thérèse, whom we called upon to guide her home.

Hélène Thérèse Marcotte “Mémère” was born May 18, 1931, on the farm in Hoey Saskatchewan, the only daughter of Arphire and Albertine Goddue. She was a child of the depression and the war years; she learned to knit, embroider and sew her own clothing and continued using those skills throughout her life. Mom made her childrens’ clothing, along with countless wedding gowns, grad dresses, baby quilts and crocheted blankets. Even in her 90’s when her body was failing, she knit hundreds of toques each year for the less fortunate. Her colourful toques were sent as far as Mexico, something Mom was so proud of.

Mom and Dad met in Prince Albert during the summer of 1952, and they had their first date that October. They were married April 21, 1953, and were blessed with 9 children. Mom was a life- long member of St Michaels Parish. She had an active role in the church choir and was very involved with her parish family. She was the Matriarch of our family. She could always be found at the center of the party and was never one to leave early!  After Sunday Mass, for at least 4 decades, our family gathered at Mémère and Pépère’s house. Any friend was welcome to come have a burger or hotdog for lunch. It was a well know fact, that Mémère could split a 10 inch cake into 30 pieces without breaking a sweat.

Hélène enjoyed many activities throughout her years. She and Dad were active members of the Dixie Chain Square Dance Club, Sasktel Pioneers, Mètis Local 269, and The Prince Albert Heritage Club. They were especially proud to be crowned Mr. and Mrs. Winter Festival in 2003 in recognition of their community involvement.

At 94, mom was no stranger to change, she was born into a world where technology was not a thing and lived into a world where people cannot survive without it.  Constantly growing, mom went back to school in her 40’s, she learned to drive, mastered the serger, and the computer, and even had a Facebook account. With children and grandchildren across Canada and as far away as Switzerland, she needed a way to keep tabs on everyone. Our mother was the picture of determination, resilience, and grit wrapped up in the tiniest of package with a million-dollar smile.  Her footprint on this earth will live on through the hearts and minds of generations. We strive to honour the rich tapestry of her life by bringing kindness, love, laughter and song into our daily lives.

Hélène is survived by her nine children and their spouses, Muriel (Clem April), Willy (Cindy), Diane, Florence (Bob Hannah), George, Maurice, Thérèse (Barry Gerow), Michael (Denise), Paul (Stephanie); 38 grandchildren and their spouses; 54 great grandchildren and spouses; and 1 great-great grandchild. Her family totals 133 people at last count.

She is also survived by Louis’ siblings Albert (Wendy) Marcotte and Laurie Marcotte, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hélène is predeceased by her loving husband Louis Marcotte; her daughter-in-law, Kathy Marcotte; her grandson, Tony Marcotte; and her twin great-granddaughters, Haven and Grace Gerow.  Hélène is also predeceased by her parents, Arphire and Albertine Goddue; her siblings, Albert (Zenia) Goddue, Marcel (Pat) Goddue; Louis’ family, Emile and Leonie Marcotte; siblings, Esther (Arthur) Turcotte, Aline (Damien) Gignac, Oscar (Mildred) Marcotte, Antonio (Marguerite) Marcotte, and  Alain Marcotte; nephews, Allan Goddue, Ernie Marcotte, Marcel Marcotte, and niece-in-law, Sandra Marcotte.
