Obituary of "Jim" Logan

“Jim”, Maxwell James Logan, was born March 31, 1950, at the Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert.  He was raised on the family farm in the Royal District until he was eight years old before the family moved to Prince Albert. He attended Vincent Massey and King George Elementary Schools and graduated from Tech. He enjoyed all sports and excelled at hockey and was the captain of the football team. His love of sports continued throughout his life as he played Oldtimers hockey into his 50s and slow pitch into his 70’s. He started his grocery career working for Harold Guy at Harold’s IGA when he was eleven years old. He delivered flyers and groceries and continued to work in the store learning the grocery business alongside his friend and mentor until he ventured off on his own at Jim’s Food’s.  He spent a year there before he and Gail bought the little store at Christopher Lake, Logan’s Family Store, which they ran together for 35 years.

Jim met the love of his life Gail, in his first year at Tech. They started dating and as they say, the rest is history.  They were married June 6, 1970. They welcomed their daughter, Jimmette Gail in 1972, followed by son, Daniel James in 1974.  Jim was a very involved Dad, coaching hockey, running from rink to gymnasium to follow the kids’ sports, all while running the store 362 1/2 days a year. This didn’t stop once he became a Grandpa. Daniel, Carter, Kamryn and Jacob were always proud to have Poppa Jim cheering them on in their chosen sports. Great Grandson Levi was Poppa’s sidekick watching any hockey game they could find on tv for their nighttime cuddles these past few months.

In 2012 Jim and Gail made the difficult decision to sell the store and retire. They spent nine winters in Lutz, Florida where they developed a community of friends that became like family. They rode their motorcycles while in Florida and upon returning to Christopher Lake, Jim joined some of his friends and started riding once a week.  This grew as others joined in and became a biker family riding when they could and enjoying each other’s company. Jim and Gail enjoyed traveling especially their tour of the British Isles and most recently their life changing trip to Israel, where he was baptized in the Jordan River.

Never to be idle, most recently Jim could be found at Waskesiu where for the past nine years they worked for the Waskesiu Golf Course mowing the fairways, enjoying “God’s Country”.  

Being a social person, Jim never met a stranger, wherever he went he made friends and left an impression. He enjoyed his walks and visiting whoever he met along the way. Although Jim wasn’t able to get out and about these last few months, he was always so happy and appreciative of the people that made time to come to visit him. His door was always open, the calls, texts, and visits were so appreciated. Jim was known for his sense of humor, and we were fortunate that he kept us laughing through these last few months when laughter wasn’t always easy.  There were so many “Jimisms”/ one liners that we could and might someday write a book.

Jim devoted his life to family, friends, and service. While living in Prince Albert he was a Jaycee. After moving to Christopher Lake, he joined the Lakeland Volunteer Fire department becoming fire chief for several years. He also joined the Lakeland Lions Club and was honored as a Lifetime member in 2015. Being a natural leader, he served in all the executive positions. Jim was valued member of the community and known by many. He was recognized as Citizen of the Year for the Lakeland area in the early 90’s. Jim was always willing to help where needed. He was the MC for many different events, organized fundraisers, flipped burgers, cleaned parks, if there was a job to be done, he was there to help.  Many people stopped by the store for a visit on their way to the lake, just to catch up and get some of his homemade sausage.

Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years Gail (Paxman); daughter Jimmette (Ryan) Cossette; grandsons Carter and Jacob; great grandson Levi; son Dan (Tammy) Logan; grandchildren Daniel and Kamryn Logan, Carter and Waylon Altstadt; sister Darlene Patenaude; brother John (Karla) Logan; sister-in-law Kim Logan; sister Dianne (Tony) Caissie; brother Scott (Susan) Logan; sister-in-law May Dyck; brother-in-law Bob (Laurie) Paxman; sister-in-law Lynda (David) Russell; sister-in-law Dot (Glen) Zahara and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Allie and Agnes Logan; brother Don Logan; father and mother-in-law Carl and Edith Paxman; brother-in-law Bud Paxman; sister-in-law Doris Paxman; brother-in-law Hal Dyck; and brother-in-law Al Patenaude. Jim will be missed by all those that loved him.

Graduation will be held at 2:00p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2024, Spruce Home Activity Centre.  Following lunch, the Interment will be held at St. Christopher Cemetery.  Jim was always a man of strong faith.  He was fortunate enough to belong to different church families in the communities he lived in.  The Bereans at Idlewild Church in Florida, St. Christopher’s Anglican Church, Prince Albert Alliance Church, and the Lakeland Bible Church where he was a member until his passing.  In his words, as his body grew weaker, his faith grew stronger.  Memorial donations can be made in Jim’s memory to the Lakeland Lions, Lakeland Bible Church Box 211 Christopher Lake, SK S0J0N0, or Mont St. Joseph Foundation, 777-28^th Street East, Prince Albert, SK.
