Bertha Horn It is with sadness the family of Bertha Horn (nee Dyck) announce her passing at the Idylwild Lodge in Spiritwood on June 23, 2014. Bertha was born November 11, 1924 near Aberdeen, Sask., the second child in a family of 12. She grew up in the Makwa District, going to school at Ferris until Grade 8. Bertha met John at Bapaume while working as hired hands at the MacDonald Ranch. They married in 1945 and started their life together settling 1 ½ miles east of Mildred. Bertha was the steady hand that guided her family through the various stages – working farm life, Spiritwood town life and retirement. She was an excellent organizer, note maker and bookkeeper for the Horn family operations. Her gardening, homemaking skills and hard work in the farming operations helped the farm to prosper. Bertha was involved in the Mildred community. She was Secretary for the school board and secretary-treasurer for the Mildred hall for 20 years. Bertha, John & Doug moved to Spiritwood in 1981. She continued to be involved with the United Church, Tourist Booth, Horticulture Society & Pioneer Centre. Bertha & John travelled to England, Europe, US and took numerous bus trips. They attended their grand children's various sports activities, graduations & weddings. They enjoyed attending picnics, sports days and events in the surrounding area, such as Carlton Trail Jamboree, Shell Lake Hey Days, Timberland Rodeo, Curling Tankard in North Battleford and many others. Bertha will be remembered for her baking and always had pails full of cookies in her freezer readily available for different occasions.
