Obituary of Stuart Lawrence Lovell
Stuart Lovell
1936-2015
Stuart Lawrence Lovell was born on October 7th, 1936 in Elk Point, Alberta to Lawrence (Bud) and Evelyn Lovell. He was the oldest of two children. He had one sister, Carole Thorsen. Stuart spent his younger years in Onion Lake,Sask where his father worked at various jobs. The family later relocated briefly to Prince Albert and then to Kinistino, Sask; in the early forties where his father Bud worked on the farm of his father in law and his mother Evelyn became a busy farm wife. In 1950 his father took a job with the Department of Indian Affairs and moved the family to Sturgeon Lake. Here Stuart finished his schooling up to grade eight at Alingly School. He then moved back to Kinistino to finish his high school living first with a cousin and then his grandfather.
Upon completing high school, he explored the idea of joining the RCAF as a pilot but after completing the application process changed his career ambitions and went back to school studying Lab and X-ray technology. He landed a position in the lab at the Shellbrook Hospital, where it was not long after that he met his wife, Dorothy Elliot. Stuart and Dorothy married in July of 1959 and had two boys, Scott (Born 1960) and Cory (Born 1963). He completed his private pilot’s license while living in Shellbrook. Stuart became increasing more interested in Hospital Administration and furthered his training in Administration, eventually accepting a position in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, as the Hospital Administrator in 1965. After spending less than a year in Birch Hills an opportunity arose for an Administrative position in La Ronge. Stuart accepted the job and relocated his family to La Ronge in 1967. Over the next 29 years, Stuart worked within the Saskatchewan Health Services System in the North. Both of his boys completed their high school and Dorothy worked for the La Ronge Medical Clinic. Stuart and Dorothy enjoyed living in the north and took advantage of all the recreational opportunities that the north had to offer. They made several friends and business ventures while living in the north, including the purchase and operation of the Riverside Motel and the Wapawekka Lake Fly In Fishing Lodge, with their good friends Jim and Ann Hryniuk. Stuart was an active member in the local Kinsmen Club, working on various community based projects for the town. He enjoyed boating, fishing, snowmobiling and socializing with friends. In 1995 Stuart retired from the hospital and both he and Dorothy moved to Shellbrook, where they lived until Dorothy passed on in 2013. Stuart sold their family house and moved across the street into a condominium, where he resided until his death. Stuart lived life to the fullest and touched many people through his infectious, positive attitude in all that he did. Stuart is survived by his sons Scott & wife Kerry, son Cory & wife Sandra, his brother Bill & wife Hilda, sister Carole Thorsen, sister in law Doreen Elliot, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins as well as his beloved grandsons Mathew, Derek & Tyler and his granddaughter Shauna. Stuart is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Lovell; his parents Lawrence & Evelyn Lovell; his mother and father in-law, Ella & Ned Elliot; his brothers in-law, Ken and Gordon Elliot; and his sister in-law, Georgina (Carl) Pawliw.
