Obituary of George Alvin Bruce
BRUCE- Mr. George Bruce, age 90, late of Sturgeon Valley, passed away at Mont St. Joseph Nursing Home in Prince Albert on Friday, November 9, 2007. George was born on December 2, 1916 to Charles and Christina Bruce. He was raised in Sturgeon Valley and attended Brandt School, but due to his father's death it was necessary for him to leave school at an early age and help earn the family living. He worked for several neighbors and in the winter he hauled freight from Big River to Dore Lake with a sleigh and two teams of horses. George joined the army and served in England in WW2. George married Freida McWhirter in 1946. Their first home was the parsonage just south of the Sturgeon Valley store. It was while living there that Wayne was born. Later they purchased two quarters of land, on which they grain farmed, milked cows and shipped cream. George fed hogs for a number of years also. He was an avid hunter, he loved sports, particularly baseball. Another love of George's was camping and fishing. George and Freida would go on many blueberry picking excursions. Wayne married Judy Bremner and they had two children, Kevin and Dawn. George's life took a delightful turn. He spent many hours with his grandchildren and loved every minute of it. In 1973 Wayne and his dad started farming together. That winter Goerge helped Wayne take out logs that were used to build Wayne and Judy's house. A few years later George and Freida sold their land to Wayne and Judy and they built a house for themselves. George worked as a caretaker at Sturgeon lake Regional Park for three years before retiring. He helped Wayne on the farm for a number of years after that. In March of 2000 George lost his wife Freida after 53 years of marriage. George spent two years residing at the Good Shepherd Villas in Prince Albert before moving to Mont St. Joseph's in P.A. just before Christmas of last year. In recent years when Wayne would bring his dad out to the farm he loved to talk about the good old days as he call them. George's life on earth as we know it is over but his memory and his love for us will be with us forever. George leaves to mourn his passing; A son, Wayne (Judy) Bruce of Sturgeon Valley , His grandchildren, Kevin (Lynn) Bruce of Sturgeon Valley and their son, Ethan, Dawn (Bryan) Nyberg of Prince Albert and their son Brooks, A brother, Robert (Lorna) Bruce of Winnipeg MB.
