Obituary of George Richard Clavier
Dad died peacefully at Pineview Terrace Lodge in Prince Albert, at the age of 97. He was the third child born in a log cabin on the family farm of Ernest and Germaine Clavier in the White Star district of Saskatchewan. He is the last survivor of that family, having been predeceased by his older sisters, Eugènie and Rose, his younger sister Thérèse, and his youngest sibling, André.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Pauline (née Sowyk). George and Pauline had six children, Reva (David Archer), Richard (Brenda), Brian (Pearl Morin), Kevin, Glenn, and Adrian. Their son Richard gave George and Pauline their only grandson, Douglas, who provided them with two great grandchildren. Sadly, two of George and Pauline’s sons predeceased Dad - Richard in 2004, and Adrian in 2015.
Dad served in England, Germany, Italy, and France during the second world war, and was a sergeant when he was discharged in mid-1946. While he was in France after the end of the war, he re-established family contacts with his aunts, uncles, and many cousins in the south and in Paris. Shortly after his return, he met Pauline, a pretty Ukrainian. They were married in late 1948. In 1952, he began work as a correctional officer at the Prince Albert Federal Penitentiary. After twenty years in the main institution, and another ten at the Farm Annex, he retired in 1982.
An avid vegetable gardener (flowers were not considered useful), hunter, fisherman, and chef of a majestic “soup du jour,” his children were well fed and dearly loved. He drove many long hours on the annual family vacations to Alberta, BC, and the northwestern US, with Pauline, the planner and navigator, in the passenger seat. After retirement Dad admirably supported his wife as she continued to work, by making her lunch each day and baking his special rye bread. After Mom retired they extended their travel to Florida, Hawaii, France, Italy, Russia, the Netherlands, Spain, Mexico, and South America.
We will remember Dad most for the twinkle in his eyes and teasing sense of humour, and his amazing ability to nap anywhere, at any time.
