Obituary of Walter Frank Kowal

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we say goodbye to Walter Frank Kowal. He was born on November 8, 1929 on the homestead in Honeymoon, Saskatchewan, and passed on February 14, 2018 in the Prince Albert Victoria Hospital at the age of 88. He was born into the family of Walter Sr. and Anne Kowal. He had four sisters (Ellen, Francis, Josey and Ann) and three brothers (Stan, Steven and Johnnie). Walter was the eldest son, and as such he paved the way and had to be responsible. Walter went to Padolie School in Honeymoon until grade 8. Then he took his grade 9 at P.A.C.I. Instead of finishing his grade 10-12 schooling, he went to Ontario to find work. He worked there for several years before returning to Honeymoon to farm. As farming was not lucrative enough, he found work as a crane operator at the Northern Wood Preservatives plant. When the Prince Albert pulp mill opened, he was hired on as a crane operator there. He worked at the pulp mill until retirement. While living in Honeymoon, he met his soon-to-be-wife, Grace Ashby, who was a school teacher at the Padolie School. They raised four children: Bryan (Lois), Kerry (Darlene), Randy (Bonnie), and Michele. In the years to follow, he had numerous grandchildren, nephews, nieces and even great-grandchildren. His interests included playing the saxophone in different bands, ice-fishing with family and friends, summer fishing, cutting firewood, and playing Kaiser. In his latter years, he developed an interest in gardening and he definitely had a “green thumb”. He especially loved growing tomatoes and strawberries. He was a church-going man and faithfully attended Albertville church. He loved to socialize and have fun. He was predeceased by his wife, Grace (2010); son, Bryan (2014); grandson, Alexandros Stavrou (May 2014); mother, Anne; father, Walter Sr.; youngest brother, Johnnie; brothers-in-law, John Leibrecht and Paul Yachetti; and sister-in-law, Yvonne Kowal. He is survived by his sons, Randy and Kerry; and his daughter, Michele Stavrou (Kowal); grandchildren: Chad, Kailyn (Toni), and Shayne Kowal; Dylan, Logan, and Jacob Kowal; Joshua Forrest; Stavros (Tim), Kyriakos and Costantinos Stavrou; and Anastasia (Kelcy) McDougall. He is also survived by his siblings Ellen Bayer (Tom), Francis Giavedonni (Leno), Stan Kowal (Evelyn), Josie Yachetti, Ann Leibrecht, Steven Kowal, and Audrey Kowal; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and friends. Funeral Service will be celebrated at 2:00pm on Friday, February 23, 2018 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church 260 - 25th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Father D.J. Vu celebrating. Interment will be at a later date in the Honeymoon cemetery. Family and friends wishing to send online condolences are welcome to visit www.beaulacfuneralhome.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Beau “Lac” Funeral Home, Lorne Adams, Funeral Director, Prince Albert, SK 306-763-3322. ~The song is ended, but the melody lingers on…….
