Obituary of Georgina Norma Cross

Georgina Cross December 13, 1924 - June 24, 2018 Georgina Norma (Schlechte) Cross was born 13 December 1924 and died 24 June 2018 at the age of 93. The eldest of five children, she grew up on the family farm at Whittome knowing the value of hard work but also enjoying playing the accordion, riding horses or motorcycles. After finishing her schooling she entered nurses training at Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert graduating in 1947. Her favourite part of nursing was obstetrics. After graduation she worked for a year at the Melfort Hospital before returning to Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert. Her goal was to go to Alaska but a friend wrote her and asked here to come to Spiritwood where a new hospital had been built. She came for a year and stayed for seventy. In 1950, Georgina married William (Bill) Cross and continued working full time as well as raising a family of twelve children. She was always doing something – cleaning, cooking, baking, sewing or knitting socks or sweaters while watching tv. Mom loved to garden and quilt, making many quilts for weddings, graduation or births. She kept her mind active doing the daily crossword puzzles in the newspaper, cryptograms and jigsaw puzzles, removing the edge pieces to make it more challenging to complete. In her younger years she liked to dance and a favorite tv program was the Saturday Night Old Time Dance Show on cable. We all have special memories of mom – the sometimes scary trips to the city or swimming lessons at Memorial Lake all piled into the back of the truck often with cousins along. Her obsession with laundry, the clothes sometimes still warm from the wearing when she grabbed them, the weekly hair washing that often included any extra kid who was around being flipped over her hip, head down over the sink for a good scalp scrubbing. Little did we know today you pay extra for a “scalp massage” of that caliber. Mom will be sadly missed. She was the glue that held us together. Home meant mom and mom meant fresh bread, cinnamon buns or cookies when we came home from school. Mom never said good bye when ending a telephone conversation so we won’t say good bye now because when we next meet she will greet us with fresh bread and peanut butter.
