Obituary of Roy George Stieb

Roy George Stieb July 13, 1946 - October 6, 2019 With broken hearts, we announced the tragic passing of our dear father, Roy Stieb, on Sunday, October 6th, 2019. Dad was born on July 13, 1946. He was the third child born to Raymond and Helen Stieb. Dad was one of the hockey-playing, farm loving Stieb Boys. He spent his life, beyond a few years to play hockey and when first married, living in Yankee Valley. This is where he attended school to Grade Eight and returned to live in 1972 to raise his family. In the fall of 1964, when Dad was 18, he went to play hockey with the Flin Flon Bombers of the SJHL. At the time Flin Flon was a farm team for the Detroit Red Wings, Dad’s favorite NHL team growing up. Dad had skills on the ice. To this day, people who played with and against Dad often comment about his determination, grit in the corners and sharp elbows. After two years with the Bombers, Dad headed to British Columbia to work on a sawmill, until Grandpa Stieb convinced him to return to Yankee Valley to farm. During that time, winters were spent playing with the Leask Flyers and then the Shellbrook Elks. Dad took great pride in winning many championships with his teammates in Shellbrook whether in his school years with the Terriers or playing Senior with the Elks. It was during this time that he met a cute nurse who was new to the area, Opal McKee. They were married in 1971 and spent the next 45½ years together, the majority of it living on their farm on the Yankee Valley School site. Life was busy as Dad ran a mixed farming operation, while Mom worked full time. Dad and Mom had three children - Shawn, Shannon & Stephen. One cannot argue that Dad’s “kids” were his pride and joy. Life rearranged from playing to coaching hockey, getting the kids to and from sports and extra-curricular activities, hunting, attending church on Sundays and spending time together as a family. Yankee Valley was Dad’s home, he was proud to be a Stieb and talked fondly of his family, especially of farming with his father, Raymond who he greatly admired. While Dad’s death is a tragedy, he passed away in the home he built with his family and improved upon over the years. It was with love and commitment that Dad supported Mom through her illness with cancer. He drove her to her many appointments, held her hand as she met with doctors to get results and encouraged her to keep fighting when it was overwhelming. After her passing, he pressed on for the sake of his children and grandchildren. Looking back, the memories of our childhood and family, knowing Dad’s commitment to God, his children, and grandchildren, and understanding that Dad and Mom are together again brings us peace. Dad leaves to mourn his son, Shawn, his daughter Shannon, son-in-law Ron, and their children Olivia and Jacob and his son Stephen and his children, Breeze and Bryson. Roy is survived by his siblings and their spouses, John and Joan, Leo and Donna, Robert and Vivian and Caroline and Myron, along with their families. He is also survived by his in-laws, Blair and Jeanette, Wilma, and Dick and their families. Dad was predeceased by his wife, Opal in 2017, his father and mother, Raymond and Helen, his mother and father in law, Arthur and Esther McKee, brother and sister in law, Jack and Alretta Walsh and nieces Chassidy and Teresa and nephew Robert.
