Harold Magrath
December 14, 1918 – October 12, 2019
With sadness, but with gratitude for a long life lived, the family of Harold announces his peaceful passing in Big River, Saskatchewan, at the age of 100. Harold is survived by: grandchildren – Tammy (Chuck) Morin, Shaya & Dylan Magrath, daughter-in-law – Ilsa Magrath, great-grandchildren – Talia (Shane) Kenny, Owen & Aaron Magrath, Iaisha, step-great-grandchildren – Chaneil, Kaden, Roan, Rhea, & Damon Morin, James & Jaylene Morin, great-great-grandchildren – Tegan, Brody, & Bria Kenny, cousin – John (Barb) Dunn, nephew – Walter (Beatrice) Lukye, Legion ‘family’ – too many to name, special friends – Rob Warriner & Kathy Hartnett, Ted Hartnett, Willie Morin, Dennis & Eileen Kendall, and many other extended family members and friends.
Harold was predeceased by: spouse – Marion Lukye, children – Gary, Jacqueline, & David Magrath, mother of his children – Lillian Thomas (Doucette), daughter-in-law – Donna Magrath (Pho), brothers – Cecil (twin), Cliff, Jack, & Mervin Magrath, grandsons – Allan & Kurt Magrath, Shane Magrath, great-grandson – Thomas Warriner.
Harold was born in Moose Jaw and his family later moved north to homestead in the Bodmin area (Clearwater Lake). Harold was a World War II veteran and became an active member in both the Estevan and Big River branches of the Royal Canadian Legion. Harold resided in Estevan for most of his adult life. After he retired, he traveled to his second home in Clearwater during the spring/summer months. Harold eventually made Big River his full time home. Harold liked: stock car racing, curling, helping at Legion, beer, cooking, hosting ‘cook outs’, fixing anything, dogs, arguing, hunting, fishing, and gardening. Unfortunately, he suffered from debilitating infections and, as a result, had a leg amputation. Harold moved to long term care at the Big River Health Centre a few years ago. Harold received friendly, compassionate care and appreciated all the help he got (even though he didn’t like being dependent on anyone, ever!) He continued to face adversity with a positive attitude until his last words were spoken. Rest easy, mighty warrior!
Harold’s Memorial Celebration will be Friday, November 8, 2019 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Big River branch, at 2:00 pm. Donations in his memory will be graciously accepted by the Lakewood Lodge Auxiliary or Legion Poppy Fund.
