Obituary of Linda Shirley Detillieux
Linda Shirley Detillieux (nee Kustaski) was born to George and Laura Kustaski on February 14, 1955. She was the oldest of her six siblings: Vern, Elaine, Garry, Robert, Colleen, and Lori all followed her. She grew up in Domremy, Saskatchewan. She loved to tell stories about how they made do with so little and reminisce about the trouble they would get into as teenagers. Linda’s beloved mom, Laura, as well as all her siblings (and their spouses, children, and grandchildren) are still here with us (there are far too many to mention). She would want each of them to know that she loved them all in a special way. She loved her daily text chats with her siblings and her frequent visits to Wakaw to see her mom and her sisters.
Linda married Rene, her high school sweetheart, on November 10, 1973. They settled in Prince Albert and had their two daughters, Chantelle & Wendy. They shared a love of the outdoors, good food, oldies music, trips to Vegas, and, of course, family. They spent many summers at their cabin at Weyakwin Lake. Linda & Rene prided themselves on maintaining an impeccable house and an even more impressive yard. They were both incredibly hard workers who centered their lives around their two girls. They welcomed Grant Popowich (Wendy’s husband) into the family with open arms in 1999.
Linda worked as a Payroll Clerk for the City of Prince Albert, but she’d tell you that the best day of her career was the day she retired (at the age of 50!). Loving her grandkids became her full-time job, a job she absolutely mastered. Her first grandchild, Matthew, was born in 2003, followed by Avery in 2005. Cruise and Caprise were born in 2008 and 2010, respectively. I can’t even begin to articulate what Linda meant to these four kids. She had such a big heart and spent so much quality time with them playing cards and games, doing crafts, cooking and baking, watching them play sports, taking them to movies, (I could go on and on). The kids would constantly say how their Grandma was the absolute best.
When she wasn’t spending time with her grandkids, Linda was either cooking (her perogies are out of this world!), gardening, tending to her flowers, or watching the Toronto Blue Jays’ games. She really only had two seasons – gardening season and pre-gardening season. Every Fall, she’d tell us she was going to be cutting down on the size of her garden and the number of flowerpots she planted, but every Spring she’d inevitably do it all over again! (This year she told me she ‘only’ planted 38 flowerpots (you read that right!)).
Everyone who knew Linda would say that she had a huge heart, a kind soul, and an amazing sense of humour. She gave so much of herself and never expected anything in return (except to be complimented on her cooking, that is!). She loved to be surrounded by family and friends and she was always willing to play a card game (as long as it was for money, that is!).
Sadly, Linda was taken from us too soon after a short battle with Covid-19. She passed away on the evening of July 31, 2022. While we are incredibly saddened to be without her, we are all grateful for the time we had with her. It’s now time for her to rest, but she can rest easy knowing how much she was loved.
