Obituary of H. Sidney "Sid" Smith

SMITH .H. Sidney Sidney was born in England on Aug. 16, 1918 and passed away peacefully at the Herb Bassett Home on Tuesday , Jan. 12, 2010 at the age of 91 years. He came to Canada in 1919 and lived and farmed in Sturgeon Valley district for 76 years before moving to Shellbrook in 1995. Sidney married Millie Stene in 1941 and they operated a mixed farm for almost 50 years. They raised two children, Dwayne and Yvonne, and life was "good" on the farm. Sid was a staunch believer in volunteering, serving his community. He served on the RM of Shellbrook Council for 15 years and he also served 37 years on the district and division school boards. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Elk's Lodge. He received the Centennial Medal in 1967 in recognition of valuable service to the nation. Sid was always involved in sports, from baseball and hockey in his younger years to curling and golfing in his later years. Throughout his life, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved spending time at the cabin at Candle Lake, a good game of cards, a drink by the fire pit and Christmas! Sidney is survived by his son, Dwayne (Cheryl) Smith of Meadow Lake; his daughter Yvonne (Jim) Ellis of Prince Albert; his 2 grand-sons, Douglas (Megan) Smith of Meadow Lake, and Shaun (Michelle) Smith of Sherwood Park, AB; his great-grandchildren, Tristan, Rylan, Kaelyn and Joshua Smith. He is also survived by his sister Audrey Warren of Prince Albert, and sisters in law, Hazel Benson of Lloydminister, Bernice Stene of Weldon, Mary Stene and Agnes Stene of Shellbook. He was predeceased by his wife, Millie; infant son, Ronald; his brother Les; his parents and his brothers and sisters in law, Lawrence Warren, Arnold and Agnes Stene, Clarence Stene, Minerd Stene, Victor Stene, Emil and Myrtle Stene, Bill and Mary Kasner. The Funeral Service for Sid will take place on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Andrews Anglican Church in Shellbrook, SK. Interment will take place in the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Sturgeon Valley. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Cemetery, (General Delivery Holbein, SK SOJ 1GO)
