Obituary of Betty Knutson
Betty (Baynes) Knutson arrived peacefully into the arms of her Savior on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at the age of 76. She will be lovingly missed by her husband of 42 years, Elvin, a son Duane (Colleen) of Shellbrook, a daughter Heather (Darryl) Filazek and grandchildren Emily, Sabina and Declan of Regina. She is also survived by her brothers Jack, Clifton (Louise), Frank and Bill (Doreen), sister-in-law Emma, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. She is predeceased by her parents, James and Clara Baynes, her brother Richard and sisters-in-law, Mary and Kay Baynes. Betty was born on December 8th, 1933 in North Battleford, SK. The Baynes family farmed near Leoville and when Betty was only one year old, the family moved to Vancouver Island due to her father's health. In 1939, when she was six her family moved back to the Witchekan Lake area to farm. She attended Beauvalon school until finishing grade 7. On March 29, 1967 Betty married Elvin Knutson and they lived on a farm north east of Spiritwood. She worked at the nursing home in Spiritwood from 1986 -1994. On March 5, 2001 Betty became a resident at the nursing home in Spiritwood because she needed special care due to advancing Alzheimer's disease. Betty was active in the church most of her life. She played the piano, taught Sunday school, directed Vacation Bible School, taught CYC, a weekly program for children and sang in the Easter Cantata every year. Betty had a great sense of humor, loved to joke around, enjoyed a good laugh and loved trying to make others laugh as well. She was a hard worker who always put others ahead of herself. Betty loved to garden and enjoyed her flowers. She planted a large vegetable garden and had rows and rows of raspberries. She also enjoyed picking Saskatoons and travelling to look for blueberries in northern Saskatchewan. She canned or made into pies all these fruits and vegetables. Her winter projects included quilting, knitting mitts, toques, scarves, socks, and crocheting Afghans. Betty was very hospitable and enjoyed having family and friends over for a nice meal. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, February 15, 2:00 from the Lakeland Community Church in Spiritwood with Pastor Jerry Zak officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Betty's memory may be made to the Saskatchewan Alzheimer Association and/or the Spiritwood Health Complex Activities Department.
