Obituary of Joseph William Romanchuk
It is with great regret and sadness that our family announces the peaceful passing of Joe Romanchuk at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, SK. Joe’s life began in Strong Pine, SK on March 10, 1935. Joe attended school, worked on the family farm and spent time with his siblings, until he left home in his mid-teens to work at a saw mill in the Lac La Ronge area. In 1956, he travelled to Winnipeg to train in the army reserves. When his training was complete, he moved to Vancouver and was employed in the sheet metal trade. During this time, he had a membership at a gym owned by Doug Hepburn – who was an Olympic weightlifter. Doug noticed Joe’s natural ability and offered him a job as an instructor. Joe’s love of staying in shape and working out continued to be important to him throughout his life.
Joe made an abundance of wonderful memories and a lifetime worth of friends by traveling and working throughout Canada, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. Eventually, he moved back to Prince Albert and began working in the logging industry, cutting fence posts for Domtar Chemicals. In a short period of time, he had a crew of about 12 men working for him, including his brother Bill. Over the next few years, they were joined by their brothers Orest and Harry, and this partnership grew into Allcann Wood Suppliers. In 1973, their brother Bob joined the company and they continued to work together, until it was sold in 2015. The 40+ years Joe worked along side his brothers, nephews and friends were extremely important to him. It also gave him great pride to have had Aallcann receive large contracts for many years with Weyhaeuser and the Prince Albert Pulp Mill.
Throughout his life, Joe brought love and laughter to everyone he met. He was extremely hard working, a loyal friend, had a wonderful sense of humor and his generosity was never ending. He loved listening to country music, taking pictures and traveling, but his greatest love was spending time with his many friends and ever loved family.
Joe is survived and will be greatly missed by his sisters Rose Sarad, Eva Romanchuk, Nettie Bailey and Carol (Brian) Foot; his brothers Orest (Eileen Cottingham) Romanchuk and Bob (Debbie) Romanchuk; his sisters-in-law Cecile Romanchuk and Marie Romanchuk; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Joe also leaves his step-daughter Wanda Prosper, her daughters Cynthia and Jessica and their children and grandchildren. Joe was predeceased by his partner Cathy Prosper, parents Peter and Mary Romanchuk, his brothers John Romanchuk, William (Bill) Romanchuk, Harry Romanchuk, Lorne Romanchuk; his sisters Anne Grodziuk and Helen Romanchuk; numerous in-laws and other family members.
The family would like to give their thanks to the doctors and nurses on the 5th floor of the Victoria Union hospital for their kindness, compassion and exceptional care of Joe. Those wishing to make a tribute to Joe are asked to make a donation in memory of him to the Rose Garden Hospice, Box 2092, Prince Albert, SK S6V 1E0.
