Obituary of Mae Muriel Atkinson
ATKINSON, Mae
May 23, 1928 – Oct 4, 2023
We announce with deep sorrow the passing of Mae, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, at the Parkland Integrated Health Center.
Mae, originally Mae Muriel Magnuson, was born in Asquith, Saskatchewan as the cherished first child of Ernest and Ethel Magnuson. Her schooling spanned Asquith, Kilwinning, Melfort, and Shipman, with her graduation in Hagen.
1946 saw Mae embarking on her career at the Co-op in Melfort. However, her path led her to Young, SK a year later where she met and married James Atkinson in 1948. The pair made Shellbrook their home in 1951, and it was there they welcomed their first child, Patricia. In 1952, Mae bravely faced and overcame the challenges of polio. Her resilience shone through, as she learned to walk on crutches, emphasizing her determination.
Rodney joined the family in 1955, and by 1966, Sherry-Lynn completed the Atkinson household. Throughout the years, Mae and James established businesses, built homes with provisions for renters, and continually provided for their family.
Mae's passions were diverse; from knitting and crocheting to baking and sewing. An active member of the Knox United Church Women, Mae, alongside James, enjoyed memorable travels to places like Hawaii and the Canary Islands, and cherished their trips in their motorhome, visits to Danceland in Watrous, and their time during harvest in Young.
Later challenges led Mae to the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert in 2015, followed by stays at the Leoville Nursing Home and finally the Parkland Integrated Health Centre Long Term Care Home.
Mae leaves behind:
- Daughter, Patricia (Jim) Wasylkowski of Marcelin, SK, and their children Michael (with sons Adam and Owen), Jason (Mio), and their children Ionna and Ellena, and Brandan.
- Son Rodney (Cathy) of Shellbrook, SK, and their children Rebecca (Chris Dobson) with daughter Elka Dobson, and Blake (Carla Garvie) with children Dash and Lexi Atkinson.
- Daughter Sherry-Lynn (Rick) Jensen of Canwood, SK, and their children Jalisa (Cassandra Olson) and Derek (Agatha).
She was predeceased by her husband James, parents Ernest and Ethel, brother Ken, and stepmother Marjorie.
