Obituary of Gail DeBruin
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Laura “Gail” DeBruin of Emma Lake, Saskatchewan on December 11, 2023, at the age of 84 years. Gail was born on November 3, 1939 in Pincher Creek, Alberta to Dr. Wylie and Mary Willigar. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Tracey Forbes and Hilda (Ken) Fisher; her grandchildren: Tonya (Joel) McEachern, Tyler Forbes, Kevin Fisher and Brice (Amber) Fisher; and her great-grandchildren: Tegan and Nolan McEachern, and Jocelyn, Blake and Ryan Fisher. Also left to cherish her memory are her sister Bunny (Norm) Marsden; brother Rokk Willigar; sister-in-law Nadia Willigar; brother-in-law Barry Bailey; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Gail was predeceased by her parents; her loving husband, Thomas DeBruin; sister Elinore Bailey; and brother E. Rodney (Doc) Willigar.
Gail was an alumna of the University of Alberta, Physiotherapy, class of 1959. She worked at Saskatoon City Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital and later for Smithwick's Physiotherapy. Gail met her late husband, Tom, while he was receiving physiotherapy treatment for a work related accident which left him paralyzed. After retiring in 1993, Gail and Tom made Emma Lake their permanent residence, but often ditched the cold Saskatchewan winters for Lake Havasu, Arizona. Following Tom’s death in 1999, Gail remained at Emma Lake year round. She spent her days reading novels, building puzzles, playing cards and enjoying family visits. She was a strong-willed and witty woman, who always had time for a chat - especially if it involved a Rum & Seven!
The family would like to offer special thanks to the volunteer members of the Lakeland & District Fire Department, as well as the doctors and nurses that provided such wonderful care to Gail in her final days. At Gail’s request, there will not be a formal service. A private celebration of life will take place at Emma Lake in the New Year.
