Obituary of Evelyn Leola Goertzen
Evelyn Leola Goertzen, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully with her family by her side on October 4, 2024, at the age of 96 years.
Evelyn was born on November 29, 1927, at home in the Witchekan Lake area, to Dirkje and Leo Swope, the first of 2 daughters. In 1929 the family moved to the Leoville area where Evelyn and her sister attended and completed high school.
Evelyn worked at the Prince Albert Tuberculosis Sanatorium for a year after high school followed by a business course which led to teaching in a one room schoolhouse at Penn, SK, for a few years.
In 1954 she married Charles Goertzen and together they farmed for the next 44 years, first at the farm in Edward Lake District, then in Leoville area and finally retiring to Spiritwood in 1998. During the years on the farm in Edward Lake, Evelyn also worked at the Village of Leoville, she was an active Legion Auxiliary member for over 40 years, achieving a lifetime award, and volunteered with Willing Workers in the Leoville community. In 2019 Evelyn moved to Good Shepherd Villa in Prince Albert where she resided until her passing.
Evelyn was an avid reader, grew fabulous gardens and flowers, even winning an award for her flowers one year in Spiritwood. Curling was her favourite sport to watch, and she could tell you what year each person won or lost and what team they played with last year. She loved visiting with her many, many friends and was happiest surrounded by family.
Left to cherish Evelyn’s memory are, her daughter, Debrah (Stuart) Stephen and their family, Kelly (Brady) Dibben and Brandy (Scott) Stephen of Lethbridge, AB; her son, Robert (Beverley) Goertzen and their family, Curtis Goertzen of Saskatoon, Tyler Goertzen of Prince Albert and Ricky (Paige) Goertzen of Saskatoon, SK; her brother-in-law, Ron Wilson of Regina, SK; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents; her twin infant daughters; her husband Charlie, her grandson, Eldon; and her sister, Irene.
A Celebration of Evelyn’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 10. 2024, at the Spiritwood Civic Centre. Please join the family for lunch and fellowship following the service. Interment will be held in Penn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Evelyn may be directed to Evergreen Health Center, Box 160, Leoville, SK, S0J 1N0, or a charity of your choice.
