Obituary of Kevin George Smith
Kevin Smith passed away on October 11, 2024, at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Kevin Was born in Prince Albert and lived there for most of his life, attending Queen Elizabeth, Arthur Peachey, and Carlton High Schools. Kevin was a talented carpenter and skilled floor installer.
He was the son of Sam and Iris Smith and younger brother to Loretta. Kevin’s childhood was enriched by family camping trips and adventures with cousins across British Columbia and the United States. As an adult, he continued to explore Canada, the United States, and even ventured to Europe.
Throughout his life, Kevin faced significant challenges, with addiction being a profound struggle that altered his path. While addiction changed him, I always believed that the essence of the uncle I cherished was still within him, though it was obscured by his struggles. After years of abuse, his body bore the consequences, and despite his efforts to fight cancer, his body ultimately succumbed to its relentless grip.
I want to express my gratitude to the staff at the Cancer Clinic in Saskatoon for their incredible kindness. One staff member, Rachelle, went above and beyond to assist Kevin, coordinating services to facilitate his treatment in Saskatoon and even ensuring he could bring his beloved dog along. Her support, along with that of the entire team, made a profound impact on Kevin, allowing him to feel cared for and appreciated. It reminded me of the moment in "The Grinch" when his heart grew three sizes—Kevin’s experience at the clinic helped him feel whole again, and in the end, he expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him on his journey.
Kevin had a deep bond with animals, often finding more joy in their company than of people. An avid animal lover, he cherished several pets over the years, especially his large dogs, some of whom outweighed him. His dogs excelled in the sled pull at the Prince Albert Winter Festival, and his latest companion, Sport, was affectionately known as a gentle giant. One of Kevin’s final wishes was to ensure that Sport found a loving home.
Kevin also had a passion for tactical equipment, hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors, and he never forgot my birthday. He loved cheesecake and talked about the cheesecake I used to make him, which I though he had forgotten about. Thank you, Uncle.
Rest in peace uncle, as you can now let your mind and body rest.
Kevin is survived by his sister, Loretta; niece, Charmaine; nephew, Sheldon; and their families, as well as cousins in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. He is predeceased by his parents, Sam and Iris.
A private family interment will be held in the near future. Donations in Kevin's name to the Canadian Cancer Society support.cancer.ca , or the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan https://www.cancerfoundationsask.ca/donate/ would be appreciated.
