Obituary of Elsie Elizabeth Porter
Elsie Elizabeth Porter (Carlson) was born July 27, 1927, to Nellie and John Carlson at their farm home close to Beatty, Saskatchewan. Elsie was the younger sister of Margaret and Ruth and the older sister of Albert and Hilma. Mom had many fond memories of growing up with her family and close neighbours and relayed stories for years. Mom attended school at Kirkton and Beatty and moved to Vancouver at age 17, finding employment with Hudson Bay Store and later as a live-in housekeeper.
On June 28, 1952, Elsie married Maurice Porter at St. Alban’s Cathedral in Prince Albert. Maurice and Elsie lived on the farm in the Crescent Hill District, six miles southwest of Kinistino. They became parents to three sons, Brent, Ross, and David and one daughter, Elizabeth; and the icing on the cake, two grandsons, Joel and Kent and one granddaughter, Kara.
Mom loved her farm life and home and fortunately was able to live almost 70 years in the old farmhouse. The house had many steep stairs to climb though, and Mom eventually moved in with her daughter Beth in Prince Albert. On October 7, 2024, Mom was admitted to Victoria Hospital, and on October 20, 2024, she moved to Rose Garden Hospice. Mom’s journey ended peacefully on Monday, October 21, 2024, at the age of 97. Mom’s memory was phenomenal, and her children, grandchildren, and friends will miss hearing her stories from a life well lived.
Elsie was a wonderful wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Elsie is survived by her son, Brent (Diane) Porter and children, grandson, Kent Porter (Tarynn Freed), and granddaughter, Kara (Luke) Tilford; her son, Ross Porter; her son, David Porter (Debbie Stapleton), and grandson Joel Porter (Kayla Swaenepoel) and Joel’s mother, Brenda Poncelet; her daughter, Beth Porter; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Maurice, on December 20, 2003; her parents, Nellie and John Carlson; parents-in-law, Ellen and Fisher Porter; her siblings and their spouses, Margaret and Ernest Hendrickson, Ruth and Dick Meyers, Albert Carlson and Hilma Melnychuk; Maurices’ brothers and their spouses, Jack and Lorna Porter, Robert Porter, Fred and Velma Porter, Dick and Ruth Porter, Rae and Ruth Porter, William and Pauline Porter.
