Bernard Gyoerick

Obituary of Bernard Peter Gyoerick

It is with great sadness that the family of Bernard “Bernie” Gyoerick, beloved husband of Yvonne, announce his peaceful passing surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer, on October 22, 2024, at the Rose Garden Hospice, Prince Albert, SK.

Bernie was born December 1, 1939, in Humboldt, SK to Veronica and Alphonse. the second youngest of seven children.  He and his siblings were raised by their Aunt Theresa Gyoerick on a farm outside of Cudworth, SK.  He left school after grade 5 to work on different farms and then ventured into construction work.  He worked at Burns until it closed, and then moved into the career of painting for the public school division, for 23 years, until his health made him take early retirement.

He met the love of his life, Yvonne, at a New Year’s Dance at the East End Hall in Prince Albert, SK.  After three months of dating, he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, but they didn’t get engaged until a year after dating. A year after their engagement they married, on July 31, 1971.  They had two children, Gwendolyn and Jason. Bernie was a proud father and became even prouder when his grandchildren were born.  He loved children so much and children seemed to be drawn to him because of his fun and caring nature.

He was always happy to help when he could and would be seen in the neighbourhood cutting not only his grass, or shoveling snow in his yard, but around the block to help his neighbours.  He took pride in his house and yard, and it always looked meticulous.  He was a jack of all trades, between fixing things around the house, or on his vehicles; he would also make amazing meals.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Yvonne (née Piché), his daughter Gwendolyn (Jim), his son Jason (Joseph) and his grandchildren: Shelby (Cohen), Addison and Hayden.  His Godchildren: Bonnie, Glen, Lorelle and Bradley.  His siblings: Tony, Edward, Josephine Zinger, George, and Jimmy.  His in-laws: Emile Piché (Marie), Rita Stevenson (John), and Doris Brisebois (Denis), and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents: Veronica (Peter) Zeeben, Alphonse (Evelyn) Gyoerick, his Aunt Theresa Gyoerick, his in-laws Fred and Zilda Piché, his siblings and in-laws: Marie (Ted) Fiddler, Arnie (Rose) Gyoerick, Gerald Gyoerick, Nadine Gyoerick, Leona Gyoerick, John Vandale, Blanche Piché, Lawrence Zinger, Lawrence Piché his nephew Alec Zinger and nieces Terry Stark and Barbara Gyoerick.

A special thank you to the following people, Sharon Anderson, Bev and Larry Willer, when extra help was needed, they were just a call away, John and Rita Stevenson for helping Yvonne  keep Bernie at home longer as well as the home care staff who provided assistance in keeping Bernie Comfortable.

Thank you to Dr. Halyk and his nurses Colleen and Brenda.  A special thank you to the cancer clinics in both Prince Albert and Saskatoon.  Thank you to Dr. Sami and Dr. Brunet and their teams.  Thank you to the awesome staff at the Rose Garden Hospice for the love and care shown to Bernie and his family during his stay.
