Obituary of Eugene Albert Lucas
Albert Lucas, late of Prince Albert, SK, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, SK.
Born Eugene Albert on February 20, 1935, in Landis, SK, to Joseph and Helen Lucas, he went by his second name his entire life. He was the oldest of 5 children. In 1947 the family moved to Prince Albert, SK, and Albert went to Queen Elizabeth and PACI schools but didn’t finish Grade 11. He said he didn’t need school. While at Queen Elizabeth school, Albert helped design the crest for the school.
He met the love of his life, Dorothy Neubuhr, a skinny waitress who worked at the PO Café, in 1956 and in 1957 they were married.
Albert and Dorothy moved several times and in 1966 they purchased their first and only home on 24th Street East. They stayed there for 56 years. They had 4 children; 3 girls and 1 boy.
Albert worked at the Prince Albert Penitentiary as a Guard for 3 years, but decided that was not the job for him. He wanted to go trucking.
He worked for his dad driving truck but ultimately wanted to be his own boss, so he bought his first truck and hauled rails and posts. Then he bought a gravel truck. There was one truck that stood out from all the others. It was a Ford Louisville that he named “Blue Mule”. He got that name from a movie that he took the family to called “White Line Fever”.
Albert loved to fish summer and winter. He enjoyed golf, curling and hockey. He played hockey up to his mid 60’s and was a Raider season ticket holder from the beginning to his death. He loved to play cards, cribbage, checkers and any board game, but he had to win. He was so competitive at everything he did no matter if you were a stranger, friend or family he always played to win.
Albert loved cars and speed. He built race cars and raced them at the Gateway Oval and Parkland Raceway in Prince Albert. His car number was 21. He won many races and trophies, and I mean many! Racing brought the whole family together as they all attended the racetrack together.
He was an excellent mechanic, and he wanted his kids to know how a vehicle worked. Many times, his kids helped him with fixing vehicles, bleeding brakes or just handing him tools. When his kids received their drivers’ licenses, he taught them to change tires and change oil before they could start driving.
Albert was a devout Catholic. He did not miss many Sunday masses, and he ensured the whole family attended as well. He was a true believer in God.
Albert loved his wife and children and was so proud of his grandchildren and great grand children. He was always excited to attend as many of his grandchildren’s sporting events as he could.
Albert was predeceased by his mom and dad, Joseph and Helen (Burtney) Lucas; sister, Lillian Rebryna; brother, Bruce and his wife, Bonnie Lucas; his son-in-law, Bill Halliday; in-laws, Jacob and Elizabeth (Hamm) Neubuhr; brother-in-law, Alvin and his wife, Kay Lynne Neubuhr; sisters-in-law, Lillian Neubuhr and Shirley and her husband, Johnny Switenky.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Neubuhr) Lucas; children, Gail Halliday, Donna (Denis) Jeanneau, Randy (Cheryl) Lucas and Kim (Don) Wells; grandchildren, Crystal Halliday, James (Taylor) Halliday, Daniel (Deejai) Jeanneau, Joel (Stacy) Jeanneau, Paige (Sean) Willms, Justin (Erica) Lucas, Kayla (Cody) Spence, Lucas (Kristen) Wells and Lexie (Jordan) Carriere; and great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Brynn Halliday, Mary, Sophie, Jackson and Sam Lucas, Autumn and Zach Willms, Charli and Bodhi Spence and Wells Carriere. He is also survived by his brothers, Ben (Maureen) Lucas and Lloyd (Linda) Lucas; brother-in-law, Alex Rebryna; brother-in-law, Art Neubuhr; sister-in-law, Phyllis (Ted) Fjeld, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
