Obituary of Grace Doucette

DOUCETTE-It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Grace Doucette of Big River Sask. on April 3rd, 2006 at the age of 71 years. Grace Madge Schuler was born on July 5, 1934 to Fred and Gwendolyn Schuler. Their home was situated where George Hildebrand now lives in Winter Lake. Frank Reimer rowed across Winter Lake in a rowboat to bring Mrs. Tom Smith (Granny) to be the mid wife for delivery. Much to everyone's surprise the bundle of joy turned out to be twin girls. Grandma Faber also helped deliver Grace and Irene. When she was five years old, Grace moved to the Lake Four district, which was closer to the school. Thoralf Arrestad now owns the land. In 1949 the family moved to Winter Lake (where Roseanne Watier now lives). Grace attended the Winter Lake School for two years. At the age of sixteen Grace went to Prince Albert to care for Mrs. Barrone who was very sick. When she was seventeen, she moved back to Big River and was a babysitter and housekeeper for Dr. Crux, then went on to baby-sit for the Brownfields, She met and married Albert Doucette and they were married in June, 1954. Grace belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion for twenty-nine years. In 1967 she became a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. She was also an active member of the Senior Citizens Association and Parkview Wildlife Association. Grace was a very active person that loved life. We couldn't talk enough about her hobbies. She loved knitting, embroidery, gardening, berry picking, fishing and partridge hunting. For many years she was a member of the farmers market where she took baking, knitting, vegetables and berries and loved to socialize with her friends. She also loved to go on drives and have company over. There were always coffee on treats on the table and baking in the freezer. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her grandchildren. Grace and Albert had seven children, thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her son Larry and his wife Donna of Mackenzie, BC and their son, Adam. Elwin and her husband Reid Smith, of High River, AB. And her children Candice and Gillian. Wendy and her husband Craig Townsend of Chilliwack, BC and their children Ashley and Michael. Kenny and his wife Ruth of Big River, and his children Nicholas and Shelley. Nicholas has two children of his own (Grace's grandchildren) Regina and Braden. Lawrence and his wife Tracy of Big River. Their children Levi and Quinton. Sharon and her husband Darryl Meyers of Big River and their children Tyler and Danielle, Angela and Jason. They have two grandchildren Tristan and Taylor. Ian and his wife Trischa of Big River and their children, Matthew and Andrew. Her brothers & sisters: Jean (Norman) Richards of Lethbridge, AB, Dora Schuler of Vulcan, AB, Irene Tardif of Big River, SK, Robert (Marilyn) Schuler of Canel Flats, BC, Richard (Brenda) Schuler of Vulcan, AB and Denis (Connie) Schuler of Kimberly, BC. A sister in law Isabelle Schuler of Lethbridge, AB and a brother in law Denis Carlson of Lethbridge, AB as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and countless friends. She was predeceased by: Her loving husband Albert; a daughter Carolyn Lee, her father Fred Schuler, a brother Clifford Schuler, her sisters Nancy in infancy and Hazel Carlson. Her brothers in law: Ervin Lipsack & Leo Tardif. Sadly Grace lost her husband in March 2002. After she lost Albert, she spent her winters in Alberta taking care of her Mother and summers on her farm taking care of her vegetable and flower gardens. It was this last January that Grace came back to Big River and lived in her home in town. There were many family and friends with Grace these past few months. It made her feel so wonderful to be surrounded by so many people who loved her and she felt truly blessed to be with the people that she held so close to her heart. The funeral service was held Saturday April 8th, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. from the Big River High School Gymnasium, Big River, Saskatchewan with Rev. Ken Easterbrook officiating. The hymns were led by the Big River Community Choir. Bev Morgan was the organist. Special music was sung by Grace's family, Tyler Rody and Chris and Fran Oedshoorn. Tyler Rody gave the eulogy. The pallbearers were Clayton Nelson, Frank Dittrick, Paul Fonos, Casey Speer, Daniel Michel and Bryan Meyers.
