Obituary of James Philip Hanson
James Hanson, at the age of 80, of Rabbit Lake, SK, passed away Wednesday June 26th, 2013 at the North Battleford Union Hospital.
James Philip Hanson was born February 1, 1933 to Henry and Marie (Heierstad) Hanson on the farm two miles north of Robinhood. He was the youngest of seven children. He remained on the farm for the next 77 years, until he went to live at the Rose Gill Lodge in Rabbit Lake because of ill health.
After his father passed away in 1949, his brother, Norman and he took over the farming until Norman passed away in 1961 and then he continued on farming alone. Buying more land and increasing his cattle herd. His mother, who lived with him, passed away in 1967.
Bergit Either was very much part of his life, as was his dog, Penny.
JUST A FARMER
“Just a farmer”, you said
And I laughed because I knew
All the things that farmers
Must be able to do.
They must study the land
Then watch the sky
And figure just when
Is the right time and why.
To sow and to plant
To buy and to sell,
To go to the market
With cattle and well….
You know the books
That farmers must keep
To pay all those taxes
And be able to sleep.
And you know the fixin’
What farmers must do
When machines like mad monsters
Blow a gasket or two
I guess when God needed
Folks to care for the earth
He chose “just farmers”
‘Cause He knew their true worth.
