Obituary of Albert Eugene Sullivan
Albert Sullivan
1926-2013
It is with sadness we announce the passing of Albert Eugene Sullivan -- teacher and friend. Albert passed away suddenly on October 24, 2013. Albert was born on a farm near Luseland, Saskatchewan on November 2, 1926. His family moved to Leoville, Saskatchewan when he was 7 years old. Correspondence learning aided him in graduating high school in 1945. 8 weeks of "Normal School" followed and he began teaching in September 1945 at the Pearl School near Juner. A year later he began an 8 year term at the Chitek Lake School followed by 10 years teaching at Shaunavan. In 1982, he finished his 35 year teaching career at E. D. Feehan High School in Saskatoon.
Albert was predeceased by his parents Joseph (1966) and Alice (1961) Sullivan, his brothers Joseph, Frank, Tom and Maurice, and his sister Mary (Collins). He is survived by his brother Vincent (Ida) of Victoria, his sister Alice Wallace of Powell River, a sister in law Elsie of England and 23 nieces and nephews as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
Albert spent the past 20 plus years at Chitek Lake and until a few years ago he spent his winters in Mesa, Arizona. So proud of his garden and always thrilled to take family and friends on a tour showing off precious begonias, rose garden, cucumbers and hinting at giant potatoes. Many friends and family benefited from his garden when pails of potatoes, carrots, beets, and giant sweet onions were carried home.
So many stories he had to tell -- many of us remember hearing the story a number of times. Countless tales and stories of lessons taught in school rooms, gyms, camping trips and as a Scoutmaster of the 23rd Venturer Troop in Saskatoon.
For his contributions, Albert was awarded recognition by the STF with a Meritorious Service Award in June of 1982. In 1974 he was awarded the Merit Award from the Sask. High School Athletic Association. He received his 10 Year Award from the Boy Scouts of Canada for leading the St. Mary's 23rd Venturer Troop from 1970 to 1982. He was a "Life" Member of the Knights of Columbus. He received a Letter of Appreciation from Bishop Blaise Marand for 52 years of service to the Our Lady of the Lake R.C. Church at Chitek Lake.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00am on Tuesday, October 29 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 222 Willow Street, Saskatoon.
Interment followed at Peaceful Pines Cemetery at Chitek Lake, Saskatchewan.
