Obituary of Gary Kenneth Benson
Mr. Gary Kenneth Benson
It is with profound sadness and shock that the family of Gary Kenneth Benson announce his sudden and unexpected passing following an accident. Gary was born on March 16, 1951 on SW 22-50—5-W3, RM of Canwood and passed away at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, Sask. on June 11, 2014 with his family surrounding him.
We celebrated the life of Gary as a dad, Papa, husband, father-in-law, son, brother and brother in law, uncle and friend on June 17th, 2014 at Canwood Elks Community Hall in Canwood. Susan Sorensen led the group as our celebrant with prayers and the hymn - Will You Bless Our Homes and Families accompanied by Teresa Blazosek on piano. Special music by Madeleine Benson (niece) and Amanda Holder (Tony’s girlfriend), Odile Aiken (sister in law), Dallis and Delayne Aiken (nieces) was enjoyed by all present. Odile Aiken also prepared and presented a slide show capturing Gary’s 63 years.
Gary’s family participated in his service. His sons Leeland and Tony were the Urn bearers. Candice Benson (daughter-in-law) wrote and read a poem for Gary accompanied by Hadley, Javon and Tyne, his grandchildren that he loved and cherished beyond words. His sons Leeland and Tony and his wife Barb shared stories and tidbits that made up his life. Over the years he had enjoyed farming, trucking (G & B Hauling) and custom spraying (Benson Custom Spraying). He especially enjoyed working in his shop and was extremely creative. At 40 years old he built a pontoon boat, numerous trailers, hitches, motorbikes and more – all from a picture! Gary and his two brothers built an airplane and each flew it. Leeland and Tony were extremely excited when Gary would take them up flying. Gary was still proud of his shop and drove out there most every day and was more than willing to take others to show what his sons Tony and Leeland were now building in the shop. His grandchildren loved to stay with Papa Gary and Grandma Barb and every chance they had – it was taken. Our family had two family trips – flying to Nova Scotia in 2009 and PEI in 2013. Gary loved to travel, sit around a camp fire doing dough bakes and camping. These are times that will be treasured forever. He will be missed and fondly remembered by all.
Gary is survived by his wife of 40 years – Barb Benson (nee Aiken) Canwood, Sask.
