Obituary of Kenneth Hal Smith
Kenneth Hal Smith passed away on October 30, 2024, at the age of 68 years. He was born on December 8, 1955, in Fillmore, SK. He was the 9th child of Philip and Grace Smith. His parents were in Ministry, so he spent a lot of time at church.
After a few months of Ken living in Stoughton, the family moved to Carlyle, SK. Ken started his elementary schooling there. Then his family moved to The Pas, MB, where he finished his education.
At the age of 16, Ken and his siblings, Fern, Wayne, and John began to travel in a musical group called The Believers which later became The Believers Quartet. They recorded 9 albums and were able to minister to many people throughout Canada and Ireland. Music was a big part of his life. He could sing, play drums, and had a huge collection of records. He spent a lot of time with headphones on listening to those records. He loved saxophone music, too.
It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Gwen Jessie at Trossachs Gospel Camp. They were married on November 12, 1983. They lived in Weyburn, SK for a year then moved to Carlyle, SK. Ken did various jobs in Carlyle before working at an IGA for 10 years. During this time, they welcomed a son, Philip Dallas on August 21, 1985, and a daughter, Courtney Elizabeth on April 16, 1989. Ken was an amazing father to them, and he loved them so much. He called them his # 1 son and #1 daughter.
In 1996, they moved to Nipawin to help his brother, Wayne, in the church there. Ken worked in retail and helped in the church in whatever area he was needed. In 2000, Ken became the pastor of that church. Next in 2008, they moved to Prince Albert where Ken worked at the Co-op and was a Commissionaire. He also worked at the church he attended.
While in Prince Albert his grandchildren, Olivia, Kaia, Eli, and Talia arrived. “Papa”, as they called him, loved them so much. When they would arrive, he would yell out,” Who’s in my house?” which would cause a bunch of giggling amongst them.
Ken was a very kind and compassionate man. He had a great faith in God which helped him throughout his life. He had a great sense of humor and could insert a joke in almost any conversation and say something funny to lighten the mood. He would often be talking and break into song on something that was being said.
Some interesting facts about Ken, was he loved his gadgets, magnetic phone charger. He liked his quotes- 60/40, I’m off like a herd of turtles, and 6 of 1, half dozen of another. The 3 G.O.A.T.S. for him were, Wayne Gretzky, Tom Brady, and Deion Sanders, coach of Colorado Buffaloes. Every birthday or Father’s Day he would want Chinese food for his meal and plain angel food cake was his favorite cake.
He will be deeply missed by so many people.
We want to thank the staff on level 5, level 6, and COPS at Victoria Hospital, as well as the staff at Royal University Hospital and Rose Garden Hospice.
